A Note from Loch Kelly

To begin living awake in the world we need to learn how to mix awake awareness with our daily activities—through our body and in relationships with other people.

And in Effortless Focus and Flow (EFF), we don’t start on the meditation cushion watching our breath.

Instead, we practice a simple yet advanced form of meditation-in-motion where we’re shifting into a level of consciousness which we know from our favorite hobbies and activities.

And this is what sets EFF apart from other schools of mindfulness and meditation. Most of us have already tasted Effortless Focus & Flow but not on the meditation cushion. 

We find it in the activities we love to do in our free time.

But here’s the problem we’re going to solve in this weekend workshop. Most of us can only enter that deep focus and flow in one or two activities. We experience it in a limited and highly controlled silo.

For example, someone might effortlessly shift into this awake awareness when they’re playing the piano or guitar. But then that flow evaporates when they’re cooking dinner a little later. And then the chef who enters it while cooking can’t do it during exercise. And the surfer who finds it on the wave can’t find it while gardening.

Discovering Effortless Focus & Flow

Discovering Effortless Focus in My Own Life

Looking back, I can see that I had glimpses of Effortless Focus & Flow long before I had words for it. My first clear experience came during my time as an ice hockey goalie in high school and college. 

In the middle of a fast-paced game, I discovered that I could open my awareness, relax my mind, and drop into my body. From this place, everything became crystal clear and naturally responsive—I could sense the movement of every player, the sound of blades cutting across the ice, and the shifting energy of the game as a whole. Time slowed down, my mind was completely still yet highly engaged, and I made saves that I couldn’t logically explain.

Later, a senior on my hockey team gave me the book Zen and the Art of Archery, and I realized that this wasn’t just a sports phenomenon—it was a trainable way of being aware and a form of meditation in action. 

Learning Effortless Mindfulness in Nepal

I was fortunate in graduate school to study healing and meditation in Sri Lanka, India, and Nepal. I started with conventional mindfulness, doing long Insight meditation retreats in Sri Lanka. 

Then I went to India where I met the Dalai Lama who had just come back from France where he had taught about Dzogchen, which is a direct way of accessing optimal consciousness. I was moved by his enthusiasm and description and asked him, “Who should I go study Dzogchen with?” He said Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche in Nepal.

I changed my plans and went immediately. The first afternoon he said there are two kinds of mindfulness, deliberate and effortless. He then gave us a short example of this. Within ten minutes I felt the same way I had felt at the end of a 10 day meditation retreat, except my eyes were open and I felt joyful, clear, and energized.

From 9 Years to 9 Months

My first book, Shift Into Freedom, took me nine years to complete. It often felt like an uphill battle, requiring intense effort and self-discipline. I had some dyslexia and ADHD since childhood.

By the time I wrote my second book, The Way of Effortless Mindfulness, I deliberately used the principles of Effortless Focus, shifting into awake awareness to do the work instead of forcing my attention. This time, I finished the entire book in nine months—a process that felt fluid, creative, and deeply enjoyable.

Besting Brain Fog and Long Covid with Effortless Focus 

Effortless Focus has also been a life-changing resource during difficult times. After I developed Long Covid, I struggled with severe brain fog. Sometimes, I couldn’t organize my thoughts or remember what I was about to say. But when I had to teach an online event, I discovered something incredible. If I tried to think my way through it, I couldn’t. But if I shifted into Awake Awareness and simply let the words arise naturally, everything flowed effortlessly. My mind reorganized itself, and I could access information without strain. 

This experience solidified my understanding that our greatest intelligence is already available beyond the thinking mind—it just needs space to emerge. I also noticed during this time of shelter in place with my wife Paige, that these skills allowed me to see the parts of me that would arise as activated and be with them and Paige. As a result, we emotionally grew closer and more in love.

No problem! If you can’t make it to any of the sessions, you’ll have access to all the replays after the retreat in your course classroom. You can revisit those anytime, anywhere, with lifetime access. We do encourage you to attend as many sessions as your schedule permits, but we recognize that life happens. We designed this retreat to benefit all who can attend live and those who cannot.
